The open seminar entitled Education, Science Policy & Research Assessment from the Perspective of Different Sociocultural Systems, organized on July 7, 2025 as part  of the Polish-Japanese Academic Meeting in Kyoto, was devoted to educational and scientific policy, as well as the evaluation of scientific research in various socio-cultural systems in the context of shaping knowledge-based societies. A lecture on the strategic directions of the science policy of Polish higher education institutions using the example of the University of Warsaw was given by the Vice-Rector of the University of Warsaw for Research, Prof. Zygmunt Lalak. In turn, Prof. Katarzyna Nawrot from the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw presented the issues of advancing research assessment policy – European perspective.

Based on the conclusions resulting from the study visit to the  Japan University Accreditation Association conducted as part of the “UW at EXPO 2025” project, in which, in addition to the Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, Prof. Katarzyna Nawrot, Vice-Rector for Development, Prof. Ewa Krogulec, UW Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Quality of Education,  Prof. Maciej Raś, as well as Prof. Łukasz Zamęcki, discussed how national scientific and international policy affect educational systems, directions of scientific research and the evaluation of academic results. Particular attention was paid to issues such as the balance between scientific excellence and inclusiveness, the adaptation of methods of assessing scientific institutions to long-term societal goals, and the support of innovation in educational practices. Differences in research evaluation methods, funding priorities and the role of education in national innovation strategies were analyzed.  The discussion focused on both common challenges and specific approaches, offering insights into how local practices can influence global debates on the quality, equity and social impact of science and education policies. The aim of the meeting was to create a space for reflection on the possibilities of integrating local experiences with international standards and to strengthen cooperation in shaping responsible scientific strategies.
