JAPAN’S WAY TOWARD SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
17th Days of Japan 23-25.10.2023 (program)
2023 marks the halfway point of the United Nations joint project: “Transforming Our World. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. What are the local, regional and global results of Japan’s efforts to date in the social, economic and environmental spheres? What are the most pressing sustainability issues in Japan? What other challenges does Japan face and what are its priorities? Which of the solutions developed in Japan could be a model for other countries? What initiatives are being taken by the science and education sectors? What are the prospects for making Society 5.0 a reality?
The 2025 World Exposition, which will once again take place in Osaka, is a significant undertaking which aims to promote new ideas for improving the environment globally and to stimulate initiatives which will create the society of the future. In 1970, Japan, then at the height of its post-war economic development, was the first Asian country to host the World Exposition. What reflections and hopes for the future are concurrent with the preparations for the 2025 event?
The issue of implementation of the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 in Japan was the main topic of the international academic conference entitled Japan’s way toward sustainable development / 持続可能な開発 ~日本が切り抜く道~ / Japońska droga do zrównoważonego rozwoju, held at the University of Warsaw from the 24th to 25th of October 2023 as one of the events during the 17th Days of Japan at the University of Warsaw. The conference gathered 14 presenters from various academic centers: Hōsei, Daitō Bunka, Tsukuba, Tōyō Eiwa, Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics, Yamato, Leiden. The UW Japanese Studies students took an active part in these proceedings (16 presentations). The event was also an occasion to take a closer look at the preparations for the World Expo 2025 as an event focused on propagating the concept of bettering the global environment and initiatives shaping society for the future.
